Introduction and Workshop Outline

This course is for anyone who wants an emergency response system, or who is helping an older adult to decide which emergency response system they should buy.

Emergency response systems (medical alerts) are important products that can literally save lives. And they are expensive, with costs over a 2-3 year period ranging from several hundred to several thousand dollars.

So it is worth a bit of effort to choose the right one. But we found that was far from easy, and that is why we made this course.

We developed this course because we found there were a very large number of these products, and there were big differences between them; but it was extremely hard to find objective advice or guidance as to which ones made sense for specific types of people — although there is a great deal of marketing material from the vendors of the products.

This course is based on independent, objective analysis and hands-on testing by Tech-enhanced Life, PBC, with help from a community of older adults, called Longevity Explorers, and guidance from an advisory panel of clinicians, and aging services veterans. It is funded entirely by Tech-enhanced Life and is not sponsored by any of the companies that make these products, and contains no advertising or sponsored content.

It turns out, this project was a great deal of work. We have distilled the results of hundreds of hours of hands-on evaluation, and lots of Googling of websites, into a series of bite-size lectures. We hope it will be useful for a lot of people. If you think it sounds useful for friends, please tell them about it.

We like to think the value of getting the emergency response system that has the right blend of price and performance for a specific person greatly exceeds the cost of this course. :)

If you take the course, and don't agree about its value, we will happily refund the course fee.
